The following questions may be used to help survivors of abuse and trauma relate to the characters in Among the Ashes.

  1. Which symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder can you identify in Kit Blume? In yourself?
  2. Why do you think Kit took so long to accept her parents’ deaths? Is it difficult for you to grieve past losses?
  3. What qualities do you think Grant Osgood offered Kit which helped her to overcome her fears? What qualities do you appreciate in your caregiver?
  4. Why do you think Kit couldn’t remember details about her childhood? Are there details about your trauma which you can’t remember?
  5. According to Harvey, Oona is as open as an all-night convenience store. Do you think it’s better to remain private or open about sensitive issues? Why?
  6. Why do you think Harvey took so long to recover from Annabelle’s death? Do you ever feel as if you’re stuck in the past?
  7. What do you think of Wildred Swenson’s rule, “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all?” Do you find it difficult to talk about unpleasant situations?
  8. Why was the arsonist so determined to keep everyone quiet about the Lakeshore Inn fire? What would have been better alternatives?
  9. Oona believed that it’s important to please the Spirit of God who lives within us. What do you think about her belief?
  10. Why do you think Kit was so angry all the time? Are you struggling with anger?
  11. What do you think caused Kit to realize her true feelings for Grant? What breakthroughs have you experienced, and what caused them?
  12. If you were Kit, would you be able to forgive Jacqueline? Is there someone you can’t forgive?
  13. How did Kit turn the challenges of her past into something positive? How can you use your challenges to build something better for your future?
